Frequently asked questions

Straight answers to the questions readers send us most often.

Are free AI tools good enough?

For occasional use, yes. The free tiers of ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Photopea handle most everyday tasks. Paid plans mainly add higher usage limits, access to the newest models, file uploads and team features. Start free and upgrade only when you hit a limit regularly.

Do AI tools use my data for training?

It depends on the provider and the plan. Many consumer plans may use your inputs to improve models unless you opt out in settings, while business and enterprise plans usually exclude your data by default. Never paste confidential client information into a tool until you have checked its policy. Under GDPR, you also have the right to ask what data a provider holds about you.

Can I trust AI answers?

Treat them as a well-informed starting point, not a final source. Choose tools that cite sources, such as Perplexity or Elicit, and open those sources before relying on a claim. Our research tools guide explains a simple verification habit.

Do AI detectors work?

Not reliably. Independent studies have found that detectors produce false positives, and non-native English writers are disproportionately flagged. They should never be the sole basis for an academic or employment decision.

Which single AI tool should I pay for first?

A general assistant such as ChatGPT or Claude covers the widest range of tasks, from drafting to summarising to brainstorming, so it usually delivers the most value per subscription. See our writing assistants comparison.

How do I switch productivity apps without losing data?

Export a small test project first and check the file opens correctly in the new app. Then migrate in stages: active projects first, archives later. Apps that store plain files, like Obsidian, make this far easier.

Are your rankings sponsored?

No. We do not accept payment for placement, and we buy most subscriptions ourselves. Read more on our about page.

How often are guides updated?

We review every guide at least once a quarter and re-test our top picks whenever a major version ships. The publication date is shown in each article's structured data.

Is it legal to use AI-generated images commercially?

Rules vary by country and by tool licence, and the law is still developing. Read the terms of the tool you use, prefer tools trained on licensed content for commercial work, and consider enabling Content Credentials. Our image editing guide covers this in more detail.
